3/4 of good neighbor on snl is a real sad waste of their individual talents at this point and in my tradition of making excuses for the show – maybe it’s the writer’s staff, because it’s their first year, it’s a gigantic cast, etc – but I think it’s fair to call it questionable that beck, kyle and jon would bolt for new york when a pilot was in the works with comedy central, especially considering the will ferrell/adam mckay backing.
the snl episodic formula is too constrictive and the new lonely island narrative doesn’t really make a ton of sense when good neighbor-fuelled sketches are so few and far between. the show’s format is outdated in the same way that the talk show is so both only work in particular ways with particular people, hence how hit-and-miss each are. so it’s cool to see stuff like kroll show and to a maybe lesser extent key and peele/the pete holmes show try to make it their own.
